They manage over 5100 hotels and resorts in 100 countries, and their travel rewards program offers a variety of ways to earn points. Last year Marriott Hotels merged with Starwood Hotels & Resorts, thus increasing their hotel portfolio in the world. The MMarriott Rewards program offers a wide range of ways to redeem points for reward travel and other rewards.

Marriott Rewards Program Review

The Marriott Rewards program gives you an opportunity to earn points that you can redeem for free travel, hotel stays, airline tickets, cruises, vacation packages, hotel upgrades, car rentals, Priority Pass airport lounges, merchandise, and gift cards.

You can redeem Marriott Rewards points in various ways. Transfer to airline partners for free air travel. Free hotel stays at Marriott Hotels, Starwood Hotels & Resorts, and Ritz Carlton hotels worldwide. Or you can book travel through the Marriott travel service for flights or for Flights & Hotels, and also car rentals. Or you could redeem points for gift cards or products from their partners.

Redeeming Marriott Rewards Points

  • Marriott Rewards points are not as valuable as other rewards programs such as SPG Starwood Preferred Guest, Chase Ultimate Rewards, American Express Membership Rewards, and Citi ThankYou Rewards. There are ways to get the most value from your Marriott Rewards points.
  • One of the better options is to transfer them directly to their airline partners for free reward air travel. You can also redeem points for travel through the Marriott Rewards travel center, but you do not get as much value as you will by transferring to airline partners. Here are the average transfer rats for their various airline partners. The more points you transfer the better amount of airline miles you receive (notice the points to miles transfer rates are not 1:1):

  • Because it takes a lot of points to get airline miles (average of 3 to 4 points per airline mile), transferring your Marriott Rewards points to SPG Starwood Preferred Guest and redeeming there makes more sense. Most of SPG points for airline miles transfer are 1:1 (1 point = 1 airline mile)
  • Until December 5, 2017 there is a promotion where you can get a 30% bonus for transferring Marriott points to American Airlines AAdvantage

  • The next method to redeem your Marriott Rewards points is for free hotel stays at Marriott Hotels, Starwood Hotels & Resorts, and Ritz Carlton properties. You can check here to see how many Marriott Rewards points you will need for a free night stay at various categories of Marriott hotels or resorts:  Hotel Travel Reward Programs & Hotel Award Chart Comparison
  • Another way you can redeem Marriott Rewards points is for cruises. Here are the redemption rates you receive when using points for cruises:
    • 63,000 points = $250 off of cruise price
    • 125,000 points = $500 off of cruise price
    • 250,000 points = $1000 off of cruise price
    • 625,000 points = $2500 off of cruise price
    • 1,250,000 points = $5000 off of cruise price
  • You can also redeem Marriott Rewards points for gift cards or products through partner suppliers, but you will not get near the same value as the airline or hotel options.

Earning Marriott Rewards Points

  • The obvious way you can earn points is to stay at Marriott Hotels. As a Marriott Rewards member you earn 10 points per dollar spent. A Silver member earns 20% bonus points per stay, a Gold member 25% bonus points, and a Platinum member earns 50% bonus points.
  • Until January 15, 2018 Marriott has a special promotion: Stay Twice And get A Free Night
  • You can earn 3 points per dollar for meetings, events, or group travel at Marriott hotels, up to 50,000 points maximum.
  • You can choose to earn Marriott Rewards points or frequent flyer airline miles for your hotel stay
  • Gold and Platinum members earn free room upgrades
  • Gold and Platinum members enjoy complimentary 4 pm late checkout
  • Gold and Platinum members enjoy lounge access and  breakfast for 2
  • You can earn Marriott Rewards points by booking cruises with their cruise partners. You can earn between 25,000 to 125,000 points depending on the cruise line you book with.
  • Marriott Rewards has a new shopping site and program where you can earn points for shopping for things you normally buy anyway. Check out the new Marriott Rewards More shopping program. You can get 1000 extra points on your first order of $25 or more.
