Smart luggage is a smart idea and an advance in technology for travelers. Smart luggage gives a traveler an opportunity to charge personal devices such as cell phones, ipads, laptop computers... However airlines are announcing a smart luggage ban that will begin in 2018 for certain types of smart luggage.

Smart Luggage Ban By Airlines Begins In 2018

Even though smart luggage is a great idea and an advance in technology for travelers, there is a concern by airlines that they will cause big problems. Smart luggage gives a traveler an opportunity to charge personal devices such as cell phones, ipads, laptop computers... They have features such as built in USB ports and batteries for charging devices. Upper end models even have a motor and the ability to ride the luggage like a cart.

Several airlines have already announced a ban for certain types of smart luggage. Other major airlines are expected to follow. The smart luggage ban by airlines is for smart luggage that does not have a removable battery. They fear the smart luggage will cause fires in overhead compartments or cargo holds, as was the case with certain cell phones. The problem is with smart luggage that has lithium-ion batteries that you cannot remove before checking the bags or carrying on board.

American Airlines was the first airline to announce a smart luggage ban for models that do not have removable lithium-ion batteries. Other airlines have since announced similar smart luggage bans, including, Alaska Airlines and Delta Airlines, It is expected that Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, and others will follow suit and come up with their own smart luggage ban.

Alaska Airlines Manager of Dangerous Good  said in a statement “We love innovation and understand why smart bags are so appealing for travel. While these restrictions may pose a challenge to some of our guests, there have been no incidents to date with smart bags on airplanes and we want to keep it that way."

The smart luggage ban for American Airlines and others will take effect on January 15, 2018. If you are planning on buying smart luggage for yourself or someone else for Christmas, you should do your research and make sure the model you want to buy does not fall under the airline smart luggage ban.
