Smart Luggage Ban By Qantas & Virgin Australia Begins In 2018

Even though smart luggage is a great idea and an advance in technology for travelers, there is a concern by airlines that they will cause big problems. Smart luggage gives a traveler an opportunity to charge personal devices such as cell phones, ipads, laptop computers... They have features such as built in USB ports and batteries for charging devices. Upper end models even have a motor and the ability to ride the luggage like a cart.

Several airlines have already announced a smart luggage ban for certain types of smart luggage. Other major airlines were expected to follow, and recently Qantas and Virgin Australia announced their own smart luggage ban.

The smart luggage ban by airlines is for smart luggage that does not have a removable battery. They fear the smart luggage will cause fires in overhead compartments or cargo holds, as was the case with certain cell phones. The problem is with smart luggage that has lithium-ion batteries that you cannot remove before checking the bags or carrying on board.

American Airlines was the first airline to announce a smart luggage ban for models that do not have removable lithium-ion batteries. Other airlines have since announced similar smart luggage bans, including, Alaska Airlines and Delta Airlines, It is expected that Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, and others will follow suit and come up with their own smart luggage ban.

Qantas already had put in place a smart luggage ban in the cargo hold of their planes, preventing customers from checking in smart luggage. Now they have added a smart luggage ban for inside the plane as well. Qantas has not announced a date that the updated smart luggage ban for inside the plane will take effect.

Virgin Australia has announced that their smart luggage ban will take effect January 15, 2018. Any baggage that contains non-removable lithium-ion batteries will no longer be allowed to be checked into or carried on Virgin Australia flights.
